Only Arahants can live a life without encountering the five obstacles. What are we to do when facing the five obstacles in life? The Buddha teaches us to recognize the obstacles and mindfully acknowledge them, “Ah, the obstacle!” – as we ought to do so on a continual basis.
We used to not be able to recognize the obstacles; now that we do, we just need to acknowledge – that obstacles are just obstacles, they simply are objects to be acknowledged. As a thought comes to our mind, we also recognize, “Ah, a thought is just a thought!” then naturally the thought would go away since nothing is permanent in the world. The same goes for greed and hatred. As we recognize them, “Ah! This is greed, this is hatred.” Knowing is all that matters; the knowing is what safeguards the mind.
