A Night in the Pine Forest
“That evening, the Sangha rested beneath a vast canopy of pine trees. Early winter had just begun, and the chill slipped quietly down our collars, making everyone instinctively draw their robes a little closer.”
The community gathered around a modest fire.
It flared warmly and gently, sending its warm glow upward into the pitch-dark sky.And yet, in that seemingly remote forest, local residents had quietly come and waited. Some brought water, others carried bags of food, and some simply stood in silence, their eyes filled with unspoken meaning.
In that moment, I suddenly recalled the Light Offering Ceremony at Huong Dao Temple in April of last year. That evening, the temple courtyard was illuminated by thousands of shimmering candles. Tonight, it was only a small pile of burning wood glowing softly in the forest.
The environment may differ, and light may arise from many materials and by many various means, but the profound meaning of light has never changed.
A local elder quietly sat down beside me. He said nothing, simply offered a bottle of water, and then gazed at the fire as though searching for an answer to something within his own life.
If anything can help us trace our answers in the present moment, perhaps it is the gentle flickering of a flame in front of us… Sometimes, light can listen better than any human being.
The Sangha sat like that for a long while.
The fire crackled softly, the forest wind blew in gentle breezes, and everyone allowed that warmth and sound to lead them into peacefully tranquil space, rarely found in the midst of busy life. The fire in front of us was simply fulfilling its natural purpose – radiating light and spreading warmth in all directions. It glowed just enough for people to walk without stumbling in the darkness, and then returned peacefully in its own way.
When the flames began to die down, I looked at each face around me. The elderly, the children, the Buddhist devotees, and even those who had merely wandered by and stopped, all seemed more at ease than when they first arrived.
Perhaps it was the warmth of the fire, the sound of the wind, or simply the act of sitting together in a tranquil forest that helped each person realize that no matter how tired they were, they were never truly alone.
Though everyone carries their own sufferings, a single moment of warmth can soothe our hearts, especially when shared in harmony, connection, and silent understanding.
I hope that each person would carry a little of that light home with them.
Even a single spark is enough to guide one through another stretch of life without fear of the dark crossroads ahead.Because light has long been regarded as a symbol of wisdom.
And true wisdom is not something that blazes brightly for a moment and disappears, but something that steadily, patiently illuminates the path, helping us clearly see the nature of suffering and the path out of it.The Walk for Peace undertaken by the Sangha is just like that.
Each step is a small, radiant light offered to the world. If each person could hold even a little light of mindfulness and understanding in their heart, then even though this world remains filled with uncertainty, it may gradually become more gentle and peaceful.
And eventually, it is precisely these simple, ordinary lights that are strong enough to dispel the darkness of ignorance and show the path ahead for all beings.
