During our journey of pilgrimage, earthquake relief, and offering of donations in Myanmar—a land where many distinguished Dhamma teachers have arisen and contributed priceless Dhamma treasures across generations—we were blessed with the opportunity to pay homage to the Most Venerable Tipiṭaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sundara, the 10th Tipiṭaka Sayadaw among the 17 living Tipiṭaka Masters in this country.
He is not only a Tipiṭakadhara (one who has memorized the entire Tipiṭaka), but also a Tipiṭakakovida (one who thoroughly understands it), and a Dhammabhaṇḍāgārika (Custodian of the Dhamma Treasury)—the most honored titles formally conferred by the Myanmar Sangha Congregation after a rigorous Tipiṭaka examination.
Yet, what moved us even more deeply than these rare honors was his boundless compassion, humble simplicity, and heartfelt care for all who are striving earnestly on the path of Dhamma practice.
At his meditation center in Yangon—where daily, 150 to 300 yogīs come to study the Dhamma and practice Vipassanā meditation, and where the number rises into the thousands during major holidays—we were received by the Sayadaw with a simplicity and warmth that felt like a spiritual father welcoming his children home from afar.
He still remembered our virtual meeting in 2022 via Zoom, when we joined a session with other Tipiṭaka Masters and the late Supreme Patriarch Bhaddanta Kumārābhivaṁsa (also known as Bamaw Sayadaw). The Sayadaw recalled that gathering and the discussion about the Ancient Sacred Buddhist Scripture Stupas – Dhammacetiya Project. He asked about its current progress and kindly instructed:
“Regularly reflect on the virtue of Sugato, one of the Buddha’s noble qualities. After that, make an aspiration for the success of the project—it will come to fruition.”
Under the eaves of the main hall, glowing gold in the late afternoon sun of Myanmar, each word of the Sayadaw gently sank into our hearts—like steady footsteps on the path of a true practitioner.
Notably, we must express our deep gratitude to Sayalay Hạnh Tuệ , who quietly accompanied and supported us throughout this sacred encounter. With great care and respect, she faithfully interpreted the Sayadaw’s teachings for our group and delicately conveyed our heartfelt reflections as practitioners to him. Her skillful presence and humility brought joy to all who were present.
On behalf of the Ancient Sacred Buddhist Scripture Stupas – Dhammacetiya Project, we also had the honor of offering the Sayadaw a few humble gifts, presented with sincerity and devotion:
– A set of Bát Tràng ceramic teacups,
– A box of Sương Mai tea from Hanoi,
– A copy of the book “The Footsteps of a Buddhist Monk” (Bước Chân Hành Giả),
– An informational booklet introducing the Dhammacetiya Project,
– And a 3D miniature stupa model—a symbolic souvenir representing our aspiration to build a lasting treasure of Dhamma for generations to come.
May the Buddha’s teachings endure for countless ages.
May the Venerable Elder dwell in peace and good health, so that he may continue to guide us—his disciples—nurturing our faith and cultivating our wisdom.
